Eating with Diabetes

🥗 Eating Well With Diabetes

Eating a balanced diet can help manage blood sugar and support your overall health. You don't have to completely give up the foods you enjoy—focus on balance, portions, and making healthier choices more often.

🍽️ Build a Balanced Plate

An easy way to plan your meals is the Diabetes Plate Method:

🥦 ½ Your Plate — Non-Starchy Vegetables
Broccoli, green beans, spinach, peppers, cauliflower, zucchini

🍗 ¼ Your Plate — Lean Protein
Chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, tofu, or lean meats

🌾 ¼ Your Plate — Carbohydrates
Brown rice, whole grains, beans, potatoes, corn, or whole-grain pasta

Choose water or an unsweetened beverage when possible.

🍞 Be Mindful of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates raise blood sugar and are found in foods such as:

  • Bread, rice, pasta, and cereal
  • Fruit
  • Milk and yogurt
  • Potatoes and corn
  • Sweets and desserts
  • Sugary drinks

You don't have to completely avoid carbohydrates. Portion size and food choices matter.

🏷️ Check Your Food Labels

When reading a Nutrition Facts label, look at:

Serving Size • Total Carbohydrates • Fiber • Added Sugar • Sodium

❤️ Keep It Simple

✓ Eat more vegetables
✓ Choose lean proteins
✓ Choose whole grains when possible
✓ Drink water instead of sugary drinks
✓ Watch portion sizes
✓ Check your blood sugar as recommended

Remember: Everyone's diabetes needs are different. Follow the nutrition and blood sugar recommendations provided by your healthcare team.
