⚖️ Daily Weight Monitoring With Heart Failure

When you have heart failure (CHF), your healthcare team may ask you to weigh yourself every day. Changes in your weight can sometimes be an early sign that your body is retaining extra fluid—even before you notice increased swelling or shortness of breath.

How to Check Your Weight

For the most consistent results:

  • Weigh yourself every morning at about the same time.
  • Weigh yourself after using the bathroom and before eating breakfast.
  • Use the same scale each day.
  • Place your scale on a hard, level surface.
  • Wear similar clothing—or as little clothing as practical—each time.
  • Write down your weight every day so you can recognize changes.

📈 Watch for Sudden Weight Changes

A sudden increase in weight may mean your body is retaining fluid. The American Heart Association recommends discussing with your healthcare professional what amount of weight gain you should report. A commonly used warning threshold is more than 2–3 pounds in 24 hours or 5 pounds in a week, but your healthcare provider may give you different instructions. Always follow the specific weight parameters provided by your healthcare team.

🚩 Don't Look at the Number Alone

Pay attention to how you are feeling, too. Contact your healthcare team according to your heart-failure action plan if weight gain occurs along with symptoms such as:

  • Increased swelling in your feet, ankles, legs, or abdomen
  • Increasing shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing when lying down
  • Needing more pillows to sleep comfortably
  • Increased fatigue or weakness
  • A new or worsening cough
  • Changes in your usual activity tolerance

📝 Keep a Daily Record

Recording your weight and symptoms can help you and your healthcare team recognize changes over time.Today's Weight: __________

Swelling: ☐ None ☐ Mild ☐ Increased

Breathing: ☐ Normal for me ☐ More difficult than usual
